What We Are Not

Not A Mental Health Facility:

Beyond Brotherhood is not a clinical institution equipped to diagnose or treat severe mental health conditions. Men requiring intensive, professionally supervised care—such as therapeutic intervention for major depression, bipolar disorder, or other significant mental health concerns—are encouraged to seek help from qualified medical professionals. While we are prepared to collaborate as part of a broader treatment plan, our primary role is to complement, not replace, formal mental health care.

Not an Addiction Treatment Centre:

Our organization does not function as a residential or outpatient addiction treatment center. We do not offer detoxification, medical supervision, or specialized therapies for substance abuse or dependency. Instead, we can serve as a supportive adjunct to professional addiction services, offering peer support and community integration to reinforce a comprehensive recovery plan developed by accredited specialists.

Not a Homeless Shelter or Hostel:

Beyond Brotherhood does not provide emergency shelter, transitional housing, or any form of residential accommodation for men experiencing homelessness. While we may help connect individuals to appropriate community resources, we focus on cultivating personal growth, community support, and access to helpful networks—not on direct housing solutions.

Our Origins

A Vision Born from Grief, Brotherhood, and the Wild

In March 2023, my world shattered. My wife, my closest companion, left for Victoria, BC, to celebrate her 65th birthday with our children and grandchildren. Days after landing, what was meant to be a joyous occasion turned into the unthinkable—she was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Radical surgery followed, and life as we knew it was forever altered. As she battled through surgeries and hospital stays, I found my refuge in the wilderness. I moved into our travel trailer, seeking solace in the raw embrace of nature. By December, she was in hospice. On January 3, 2024, she passed away, leaving an ache so deep it felt unmovable. Struggling with the emptiness, I left our condo behind and turned to the mountains, my new home. Through the haze of grief, her voice remained clear. One of her final requests was to find a brotherhood—a group of men to lean on once she was gone. Her request led me to powerful men's circles like Wyldmen, Sacred Sons, and Man Aligned. These groups provided strength and the bond of brotherhood during my darkest nights. In February 2024, I attended my first Sacred Sons immersion, just weeks after her passing. In July, I completed the Embodied Masculine Experience (EMX), and by August, I was diving deep with Man Aligned in the wilderness of the Ghost River Valley. Grief, brotherhood, and healing intertwined to light a fire in my heart. During a 90-day Wyldmen program, I was asked to envision my future, and the concept of a Men's Retreat Centre began to emerge. The vision deepened after I hosted Wyldmen's first international Retreat at my wilderness campsite—something shifted within me. Then came a profound moment of clarity. Wyldmen's leader introduced me to Martin Prechtel's 'The Smell of Rain on Dust.' This book cracked open something new inside me. It taught me to express grief in ways I hadn't imagined—through poetry, haunting notes of the native spirit flute, and a more profound connection with nature. In this sacred space of brotherhood, pain, and creativity, the vision for this Men's Retreat Centre in the rugged Crowsnest Pass became undeniable. This is not just a retreat center; it's a sanctuary—a place born from loss, resilience, and the transformative power of brotherhood. Here, men will come to heal, to reconnect with their wild, untamed spirit, and to find themselves again in the raw beauty of nature. The mountains, the rivers, and the sacred spaces we create will become the backdrop for a deep journey inward. Below are poems that have flowed from my soul during this journey. Here, in the shadow of mountains so grand, Men will gather together, walk sacred land, Connecting as brothers, shoulder to shoulder, Building a bond that grows ever bolder. Through breathwork and silence, through Qigong's embrace, They'll touch their own souls, find a sacred place. Cold plunges in rivers so pure and so clear, They'll face their own shadows, confront every fear. In the heat of the sweat lodge, with wisdom and fire, They'll release all their burdens, rise ever higher. With tensegrity's wisdom, they'll balance their frame, Learning to stand tall, both humble and tame. For in these strong mountains, under stars shining bright, They'll reclaim what was lost in the long, dark night. From the mountains and the rivers to the forests old and wise, We find the primal energy where true understanding lies. In the dance of sun and shadow, in the whispering of the trees, We reclaim nature's essence, and our spirits are set at ease. With hearts of iron and softness, with minds both sharp and kind, We embrace the noble calling to leave our wounds behind. In the shadow of the Rockies, where ancient forests stand, The brotherhood gathered, a circle of men, on sacred Nakota land. Ghost River flowed beside them, its waters cold and clear, Where they sought strength and healing, facing all they fear. They built a sweat lodge, a humble place of stone and wood, Honouring the spirits, the way the Nakota understood. In the steaming, sacred darkness, they sang the old songs, Shedding layers of their burdens, where each soul belongs. Cold plunges in the river, a glacial spring's embrace, Flesh met the icy waters, spirit filled with grace. Breath by breath, they journeyed, beyond the physical pain, Sharpening minds and bodies, like a warrior's refrain. In the warrior dance of combat, fists met with brother's chest, Not in anger, but in honour, each giving his best. Through ritual and resilience, they strengthened heart and hand, Sharpened as the mountains, where the silent giants stand. At night around the campfire, their laughter filled the air, Childhood games rekindled; innocence laid bare. The inner child emerged, free of worldly shame, In the dance of joy and wonder, life was just a game. Amongst the sacred willows, they walked the path of life, Facing fear, regret, and death, confronting inner strife. Like trees, they learned to stand, their roots deep in the ground, Firm in their own boundaries, their purpose newly found. Tensegrity of body, releasing buried pain, The trauma from their pasts flowed away like rain. They found their true reflection, in the river's gentle flow, Returning to their loved ones, stronger now, they know. Back to the world they ventured, like rivers to the sea, Brothers of the valley, renewed in clarity. For they had touched the sacred, in mountains high and grand, And found within the wilderness, the strength to take a stand. Wyldmen stood in silence, cold mountain air, Yearning for nature’s embrace, nothing to spare. Lungs filled with primal breath, wild and free, Drenched in the essence of earth, sky, and tree. Mountains echoed our vows, as strength took its stand, Every heartbeat as one, bound by this land, Naked, yet armored, our brotherhood grand. Wyldmen, on day one, felt body ignite, Yearning through qigong, to master the fight. Lifting bells high, pushing limits once more, Driving our spirits through sweat's sacred roar. Muscles burned, like the sun's fiery cast, Endurance grew strong, no longer held fast, Naked, yet free, we faced the wild blast. Wyldmen began day two, fasting in heart, Yearning to cleanse the past, to depart. Letters of pain, now written in fire, Dropped into the flame to rise and expire. Mountains received our ashes with grace, Each step toward peace, a healing embrace, Naked in soul, we offered our space. Wyldmen saw the moose as silence took hold, Yearning to listen, her wisdom untold. Life in her eyes, calm as the stream, Driven by instincts pure and supreme.
